Health Insurance Open Enrollment: A Financial Planning Perspective

Financial Planning General

Health insurance enrollment season is an opportunity to do more than simply renew coverage. Whether you're enrolled through an employer plan or the ACA Marketplace, taking time to review your options can help ensure your coverage continues to align with both your healthcare needs and your broader financial goals.

Plan costs, provider networks and prescription drug coverage can change from year to year. At the same time, your own circumstances may have evolved due to changes in income, family needs or expected healthcare utilization. Reviewing coverage annually can help avoid unexpected expenses and identify opportunities for savings.

Focus on Total Cost, Not Just Premiums

One of the most common mistakes when selecting a health insurance plan is focusing solely on the monthly premium. A plan with a lower premium may have a higher deductible, greater cost-sharing, or a more restrictive provider network.

A more effective approach is to evaluate the plan's potential total annual cost, including:

  • Deductibles, copays, and coinsurance: Understand how costs are shared once you begin using healthcare services.
  • Provider networks: Confirm that your preferred physicians, specialists, and hospitals participate in the plan.
  • Out-of-pocket maximums: Consider your potential exposure to covered, in-network expenses during the plan year.
  • Prescription coverage: Review the plan's formulary to determine whether your medications remain covered and at what cost.
  • HSA eligibility: If appropriate, an HSA-eligible plan may provide an opportunity to save for qualified medical expenses while receiving valuable tax benefits.

The lowest-premium option is not always the most cost-effective choice. Depending on your anticipated healthcare needs, a plan with a higher premium may provide greater overall value through lower out-of-pocket costs and broader coverage.

Job Changes Require Additional Planning

A job transition often creates important healthcare decisions. Individuals leaving an employer may be eligible to continue coverage through COBRA, although they typically assume responsibility for the full premium and administrative fee.

Another possibility may be coverage through the ACA Marketplace. Because the loss of employer-sponsored coverage generally qualifies as a special enrollment event, individuals can often obtain coverage outside the standard open enrollment period.

Those receiving Marketplace subsidies should pay close attention to income estimates, as significant differences between projected and actual income may affect subsidy eligibility and could result in repayment obligations when filing taxes.

Job changes are also a good time to review HSA contributions. Contributions made through multiple employers and personal accounts count toward the same annual IRS limits.  Monitoring total contributions can help avoid unintended excess contributions.

An Important Part of Your Financial Plan

Health insurance decisions can affect far more than medical expenses. They can influence cash flow, tax planning, savings strategies and overall financial flexibility.

As enrollment season approaches, take time to compare not only premiums but also the broader costs and benefits of each option. A thoughtful review today can help reduce surprises in the coming year and support your long-term financial goals.
